🆕 Child Discount — Confirmed Stacking

Flying Blue applies the 25% child discount on top of Promo Rewards pricing for kids ages 2–11. 2 adults × 37,500 RT + 2 kids × 28,124 RT = 65,624 miles one-way for a family of four at the promo rate. Enter child ages at booking; the discount should apply automatically. If it doesn’t appear, the adult rate at 75,000 miles one-way still clears 2.0¢ CPP.

Effective PTO ≈ 8–10 days including recovery. Spring break must be a full 10-day window. Summer is the realistic runway for most families.

Kids walk through the Colosseum and stand where gladiators fought. History is not in a textbook here — it’s the street you’re walking on. Trips like this get remembered for decades.
Rome honest note: This is the right trip for families who can carve out 10 days. If your spring break is 5 days, Path B is more realistic. Paris works in 7 days; Rome needs at least 9 to justify the jet lag.
Path B ORD / DTW → Paris (CDG) → ORD / DTW — The Efficient Play
What

✓ This trip works if…
  • School break is 7–10 days

  • You want Europe-as-gateway — add Rome or Barcelona free
  • You have ~131k Flying Blue miles or transferable points

How to Book

  • 1   Search first: airfrance.fr or klm.nl/en — log in to Flying Blue (free), click “Book with Miles,” leave date blank for calendar view
  • 2   Enter your hub → Paris (CDG) or Rome (FCO). Enter 2 adults + 2 children with ages. Confirm 4 seats at 18,750/adult and 14,063/child before touching any points.
  • 3   To connect onward within Europe: set final destination as Rome, Barcelona, etc. CDG or AMS appears as midpoint at no extra miles.
  • 4   Transfer from Chase UR, Amex MR, Capital One, or Citi TY at 1:1 to Flying Blue. Transfers are irreversible — availability confirmed first, transfer second.

Also benchmarked: Aeroplan (Air Canada) required 236,000+ miles for the same family of four — nearly double — with return taxes from Europe at $260–$385/person. Virgin Atlantic prices London beautifully (48,000 miles RT from JFK/BOS) but UK departure tax runs $233/person on return, adding $932 for a family. Flying Blue wins decisively on family math for these routes.

Transfer & Credit Card Leverage
Chase Ultimate Rewards → Avios — 20% Bonus Through March 31
Grade: B — Legitimate bonus. Only move if you have confirmed award space ready to book.
B
  • 💲  Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus at 20% bonus — 1,000 Chase points = 1,200 Avios. Through March 31, 11:59 PM ET. Transfers instant.
  • ✈  Best family plays: Aer Lingus off-peak East Coast → Dublin from 13,000 Avios one-way (~10,833 Chase points after the 20% bonus). Or transfer → BA Avios → Flying Blue to fund the Europe deal.
  • 👥  Avios transfer freely between BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, and Qatar after linking accounts — one transfer, five programs.
  • ⚠  Honest caveat: Chase has offered 30% Avios bonuses before. This 20% is real but not the historical ceiling. Only worth moving if you have a specific redemption with confirmed availability ready to execute.

Three Best Family Plays With This Bonus

Play 1 — Ireland via Aer Lingus (off-peak). East Coast → Dublin economy from 13,000 Avios one-way off-peak. After the 20% bonus: ~10,833 Chase points per person. Family of 4 one-way: ~43,333 Chase points + ~$108/person taxes. Best from JFK, BOS, IAD, PHL. Confirm availability at aerlingus.com before transferring.

Play 2 — Top up Flying Blue for the Europe deal. Transfer Chase → BA Avios with 20% bonus → then move free to Flying Blue. Effectively earns Flying Blue miles at ~0.83 Chase points each — useful if you’re a few thousand short and don’t want to transfer an entire tranche directly to Flying Blue.

Play 3 — Madrid via Iberia off-peak. East Coast → Madrid from 34,000 Avios one-way in economy on Iberia metal. After bonus: ~28,333 Chase points. Iberia charges lower carrier surcharges than BA on its own flights. Check iberia.com.

⚠ Transfers are irreversible. Confirm availability before transferring — every time, no exceptions.

Risk Radar
No Material Program Risks Today
No devaluations, no partner removals, no award chart changes to flag

No material program risks identified today. The only clock worth watching is March 31 — but that’s an expiring promo, not a devaluation. Book before April 1 and you’re fine.

Quick Hits — Worth a Glance
Virgin Atlantic: London from 48,000 miles RT for a family of four (JFK / BOS / IAD). 6,000 miles each way per person on Virgin/Delta metal. The CPP is genuinely exceptional at ~7¢. The honest catch: UK Air Passenger Duty adds $233/person on the return, which means $932 in return taxes alone for a family of four. London is extraordinary and culturally worth it. But if “Europe for the lowest total cash out-of-pocket” is the goal, Flying Blue to Paris is cheaper overall. Worth it if you specifically want London. Search at virginatlantic.com.
🏣
Hilton Grand Vacations — 100,000 Hilton points + 3 nights from $199. Book by March 31. Sit through a 2-hour timeshare presentation and walk out with 100K Hilton Honors points (worth ~$500 in free nights) plus a discounted 3-night stay in Orlando, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Scottsdale, NYC, or a few other cities. The math is hard to argue with. The honest fine print for families: both partners must attend the presentation if married or cohabitating, which means arranging childcare for 2 hours — these are not kid-in-the-room situations. One per household, ineligible if you’ve attended in the last year. If you can clear those two hurdles, $199 for ~$500 in future Hilton nights is real. Go in knowing you will say no — probably several times. hiltongrandvacations.com.

Hyatt Vacation Club — register by this Sunday March 22. 3,000 bonus Hyatt points per night on qualifying stays through March 29. If you already have a Hyatt Vacation Club stay booked, register tonight at hyatt.com. If you don’t, this window is too tight to plan around — skip it.

Hyatt Under Canvas — 2,000 bonus points per night, register by June 30. Stays March 13–July 1 at all 14 Under Canvas glamping locations near Yellowstone, Moab, Great Smoky Mountains, Zion, and more. Works on award stays too. No urgency tonight, but if national parks are on the summer list, register now and forget about it. Register at Hyatt →

Tonight’s 15-Minute Action Plan
Three things — each under 5 minutes. Everything expires March 31.
1

Book the Hilton Kids Stay Free tonight

Go to hilton.com/kids-teens-stay-free. Pick Cancun, Tulum, or Vallarta. Choose your summer dates (Apr 16–Oct 31). Book. This requires zero points, no transfers, no math — just a date and a card. Two kids eat and sleep free for the whole trip. You have 13 days before this is gone and July will come whether you book it or not.

2

Search Flying Blue before moving any points

Go to airfrance.fr. Log in (free account). Search your hub → Paris or Rome. Enter 2 adults + 2 children with ages. Confirm 4 seats at 18,750/adult and 14,063/child. Only after you see those numbers do you touch your points. ORD and DTW have the deepest spring availability.

3

Transfer Chase → Avios only if you have a booking ready

If step 2 confirmed space and you need more Flying Blue miles, transfer at ultimaterewards.chase.com with the 20% bonus through March 31. If you do not have confirmed award space right now, do not transfer. Chase points sitting flexible are worth more than Avios sitting idle in a program you haven’t booked yet.

Savings figures = cash retail airfare minus award taxes and fees only. Does not include hotel, food, activities, or the opportunity cost of using these points on a different redemption. Cash airfare figures are estimates — actual fares vary by date, booking window, and departure city. The savings number is the right order of magnitude, not a guarantee.
