Welcome Offer

As high as
100,000
Membership Rewards® Points
After spending $6,000 on eligible purchases in your first 6 months. Welcome offers are personalized — you'll see your exact offer after submitting an application, with no credit score impact until you accept. Most applicants are seeing 75,000–100,000 points right now.
≈ $1,500–$2,000 in travel value when transferred to airline partners
One-per-lifetime rule. Amex only lets you earn the welcome bonus on any given card once. If you've held the Gold before, you won't qualify again. Worth checking before applying.

Earning Rates

Most travel cards reward you for booking trips. This one rewards you for feeding your family — which happens 365 days a year regardless of whether you're traveling.
4x
U.S. Supermarkets
On up to $25,000 per calendar year, then 1x. The weekly grocery run, pickup orders, anything that codes as a supermarket.
⚠ Excludes Costco, Walmart, Target, warehouse clubs
4x
Restaurants Worldwide
Dine-in, takeout, delivery. Grubhub, Uber Eats orders at restaurants, DoorDash — all 4x. Up to $50,000/year.
3x
Flights
Booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com. Solid rate for flights you're booking anyway.
1x
Everything Else
Gas, utilities, Amazon, Target, Costco, subscription services. This is the card's honest weakness outside its two core categories.
The Costco and Walmart truth. If either of those is your primary grocery store, the 4x math doesn't apply — they code as warehouse clubs and discount stores, not supermarkets. Amex's system reads the merchant category code at the point of sale. There's no workaround. If your grocery spend is mostly at Costco or Walmart, this card's biggest advantage disappears. Run your own numbers before applying.

Your Family's Point Potential

The average U.S. family of four spends around $1,000–$1,200/month at the grocery store. Slide to your actual monthly spend and see what the Gold produces in points and real travel value every year.

Strong case. Annual grocery points clear the card's effective fee by a wide margin.
Reminder: Costco, Walmart, and Target do not earn 4x — they code as warehouse clubs and discount stores. If most of your grocery budget goes to those stores, use the slider at your supermarket-only spend to get an honest number.
📋 Coming up — Chase Freedom Unlimited Deep-Dive
A flat 1.5x on everything with no annual fee sounds simple. Is it actually the smarter path for families who shop at Costco or Walmart? We'll run the full math in an upcoming Card Spotlight.

Annual Credits — The Real Effective Fee

The Gold's $325 annual fee isn't really $325 for most families. Four separate credits total $424/year — more than the fee — if you actually use them. Here's exactly what each one requires.
$120
Dining Credit
$10/month at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, or Five Guys. Resets monthly — unused credit disappears.
Enrollment required · No rollover
$120
Uber Cash
$10/month in Uber Cash for U.S. rides or Uber Eats orders. Must add Gold card to Uber app and select it as payment method.
Enrollment required · No rollover
$100
Resy Credit
$50 semi-annually (Jan–Jun, Jul–Dec) at any U.S. Resy restaurant. 10,000+ restaurants on platform including many independent spots.
Enrollment required · Semi-annual reset
$84
Dunkin' Credit
$7/month at U.S. Dunkin' locations. The one credit most families won't fully capture — skip it if there's no Dunkin' near you.
Enrollment required · No rollover
Total available credits
$424 credits − $325 fee = +$99 net before a single point
The honest caveat. $424 in credits assumes you use every credit, every month. Realistically most families capture Grubhub/Uber ($240) and Resy ($100) = $340, making the effective fee closer to $0. The Dunkin' credit ($84) is the one most subscribers miss — if there isn't one near you, don't count it in your math.

Transfer Partners — All 20

Membership Rewards points transfer to 17 airline programs and 3 hotel programs. Most transfer at 1:1. The power isn't which program you use — it's that you can choose whichever program has the best availability and pricing for your specific trip. Most transfers complete instantly.

The penalty ratio trap. Emirates, Cathay Pacific, and JetBlue all transfer from Amex at a 5:4 ratio — meaning you lose 20% of your points on every transfer. If you ever want to use those programs, find a different source currency. Never transfer MR to a penalty-ratio partner when better options exist.

If You Have Both — The Gold + CSP Stack

Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards are separate currencies you can't combine — but they share enough transfer partners that both pools can end up at the same airline when you're ready to book. Here's how the two cards divide the work.

How two currencies book one trip
You can't pool Chase and Amex points. But seven airline programs accept both currencies at 1:1 — so both balances can end up at the same airline on the same day.

Transfer from Chase
Chase UR · 60,000 pts → your chosen airline program at 1:1
2
Transfer from Amex
Amex MR · 60,000 pts → same airline program, same day, at 1:1
Result
120,000 miles in one account. One booking. One family trip. Two very different cards that got you there.
Programs that accept both Chase UR and Amex MR at 1:1  ·  Flying Blue  ·  Aeroplan  ·  BA Avios  ·  Iberia  ·  Aer Lingus  ·  KrisFlyer  ·  Virgin Atlantic
Chase-exclusive: World of Hyatt. Hyatt is widely considered the best hotel transfer partner in any flexible points program — and it only accepts Chase. If hotels are part of your travel equation, keep Chase points for Hyatt and let Amex MR handle the flights.
Amex-exclusive: ANA and Delta. ANA Mileage Club (Japan and transpacific) and Delta SkyMiles don't accept Chase transfers at all. If either program is on your radar, Amex MR is the only transferable currency that gets you there.
🎯

Is This Card Right for Your Family?

✓ Good fit
  • You spend $600+/month at a U.S. supermarket (Kroger, Publix, Safeway, Wegmans, etc.)
  • Your family orders takeout or eats out regularly
  • You'll actually use the Grubhub/Uber credits monthly
  • You already have a Chase Sapphire card and want to maximize both ecosystems
  • You don't have a current Amex Gold (once-per-lifetime rule)
✕ Wrong card
  • Costco or Walmart is your primary grocery store — the 4x doesn't apply
  • You want one simple card with no category management
  • You won't use the monthly credits consistently
  • You've already earned a Gold welcome bonus before
  • You're early in points travel and want to start with one card ecosystem

Tonight's 5-Minute Check

🎯 Three Things to Do Right Now
Each takes under 2 minutes. No commitment required.
1

Run your grocery number

Open your bank or credit card app and look at your last 3 months of grocery spend. Divide by 3 for a monthly average. Multiply by 4 — that's how many MR points you'd earn per month on the Gold. Multiply by 12 for the annual total. Now multiply by 0.015 (1.5¢ Flying Blue value). That's the annual dollar value of switching your grocery spend. If it clears $200, the card math works for your family.

2

Check your offer — no credit pull until you accept

Go to americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/card/gold-card and start an application. Amex shows you your personalized offer before doing a hard credit pull — you'll see exactly what bonus you're eligible for and can walk away with zero impact to your credit score if it's not what you expected. Referral links from existing Gold holders sometimes show higher offers — worth asking around first.

3

If you have the Gold already — check your credit enrollment

Log into your Amex account, go to Benefits, and confirm you're enrolled in the Dining Credit, Uber Cash, Resy Credit, and Dunkin' Credit. All four require one-time enrollment. If you're not enrolled, you're leaving cash on the table every month. Takes 60 seconds. Do it now while you're thinking about it.
